From One Family Restaurant to Hundreds: How Mi Fonda and Stream Are Helping Independent Restaurants Grow

Stream Partner Spotlight: Mi Fonda

Independent restaurants face an increasingly complex digital landscape. Between online ordering, marketplace optimization, menu management, and customer acquisition, operators need partners that simplify technology while driving measurable growth.

That's exactly what Mi Fonda has built its business around.

In this Partner Spotlight, we sat down with Roberto Angulo, CEO of Mi Fonda, to discuss the company's mission, how they leverage technology behind the scenes, and how their partnership with Stream helps restaurants grow online.

Mi Fonda has built a strong reputation helping Latino-owned and independent restaurants grow online revenue. What originally inspired the business, and what mission still drives the company today?

Mi Fonda was born out of a very personal experience.

Our founder, Daniel Hernandez, saw firsthand the challenges his mom's restaurant, El Copal in Santa Cruz, California, faced when trying to get online during the pandemic. As in-person dining disappeared, online ordering became essential for survival, but getting set up wasn't as simple as creating an account.

Some of the biggest challenges were building an online menu with quality photos and descriptions, navigating marketplace onboarding, and making sure all the required paperwork was submitted correctly so the restaurant actually got paid on time.

Daniel helped his mom solve those problems, and word quickly spread throughout the local restaurant community. Other restaurant owners began asking for the same help.

That was the beginning of Mi Fonda.

Today, our mission remains the same: helping independent restaurants grow by making online ordering simple, accessible, and profitable.

Technology in restaurants is evolving quickly. How does Mi Fonda approach technology, especially balancing simplicity for operators while driving meaningful online growth for merchants?

Our philosophy is simple: restaurants shouldn't have to become technology experts to grow their business.

Most of the restaurants we serve are independent, family-run establishments. Owners are busy cooking, managing staff, and serving guests. Some already have a presence on DoorDash or Uber Eats but don't have the time to optimize menus, manage promotions, or maintain their online storefronts. Others are just getting started.

Mi Fonda becomes their one-stop partner for online sales.

We combine technology, operational expertise, and ongoing optimization into a single service. On average, restaurants see 50% growth in online sales within their first 90 days with Mi Fonda.

Technology powers much of that growth behind the scenes. We leverage AI for tasks like menu creation and photo optimization, while continuously improving menus, pricing, and marketplace performance.

Our customers don't necessarily care what technology we're using - they care that orders increase and everything simply works.

A great example is inventory management.

Initially, when a restaurant sold out of an item, they would call our support team, who would manually pause that item across DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, and their online storefront.

As restaurants became more comfortable with the platform, they told us they wanted to handle this themselves. So we built that functionality directly into the Mi Fonda tablet, allowing operators to pause items across every ordering channel with a single tap.

That's how we think about technology: keep complexity behind the scenes until customers are ready for more control.

Restaurants working with Mi Fonda see an average of 50% growth in online sales within their first 90 days. What's driving those results?

It's a combination of many small improvements that together create meaningful growth.

We make sure restaurants have professional photos for their top-selling items, optimize menu descriptions, and ensure marketplace pricing is competitive.

We also actively manage promotional campaigns across delivery platforms, including BOGO offers and "Spend X, Get Y" promotions, tailoring them by menu item, day of week, and even time of day.

These are all capabilities available within the marketplaces themselves, but most independent restaurant owners simply don't have the time or expertise to manage them consistently.

That's where Mi Fonda creates value—we do it for them, and we do it at scale.

Mi Fonda and Stream have partnered for nearly two years. From your perspective, what has made the partnership successful?

Before Stream, menu management across multiple ordering platforms was one of the most operationally intensive parts of our business.

Stream has dramatically simplified that process.

Today, if a restaurant needs to pause an item, update pricing, change a menu description, or upload new photos, our team can make those changes through Stream and quickly publish them across supported marketplaces.

That has significantly reduced manual work for our team while allowing us to deliver faster, more consistent service for our restaurant partners.

It's one of the highest-impact examples of how Stream helps Mi Fonda do more for the restaurants we serve.

Is there a restaurant success story that stands out?

We've been fortunate to work with many incredible restaurant owners.

One of our favorite examples is a food truck in Seattle that grew from zero online sales to more than $100,000 per month in online revenue after partnering with Mi Fonda.

Another great story is Lopez Taqueria in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since partnering with Mi Fonda, they've expanded from a single location to eight restaurants, opening two additional locations within the past year alone.

We've also worked with restaurants that have grown from $600 per month in online sales to more than $15,000 per month, creating meaningful new revenue streams for their businesses.

One recent customer said it best:

"Before I joined Fonda, I wasn't getting any online orders. With Fonda, my tablet has started ringing. I now get what you do. Thank you..."

- Francisco A., El Jalisquillo

Looking ahead, where do you see Mi Fonda heading over the next few years?

Everything comes back to our mission: helping restaurants grow and succeed.

We're already seeing that happen every day. Restaurants are increasing online sales, opening new locations, and building stronger businesses.

Over the next few years, we want to bring that same level of service to many more restaurants. There are tens of thousands of independent restaurants that fit the profile Mi Fonda serves today, and we want to grow thoughtfully without sacrificing the hands-on support that has always defined our business.

We're also excited to expand the services we offer.

This year, we launched catering with a small group of restaurant partners, and we've already seen strong early growth. As we continue investing in new capabilities like catering and other growth-focused services, our goal remains the same: help independent restaurants succeed both online and offline.
